Easy Rainbow science experiments

St.Patrick’s day is around the corner and I want to make this week full of fun learning.

We explored Ireland in the LetsGoGeography lesson. We learned about their culture and listened to traditional music and of course crafts. Than I decided we need some science too.

I talked about how rainbows come from light reflecting refracting and bending through water and we spent some time looking at YouTube video explanations.

Here are the 3 ways we made rainbows:

First experiment:

To begin, you must have a good light source such as a kitchen light, a window with sunlight, or a flashlight.

Step 1: Fill up a sink with water.

Step 2: Put a small mirror halfway in the water. At the same time hold a piece of paper on the opposite side of the sink.

Step 3: Move the mirror so that the light shines on the paper.

Step 4: Watch a rainbow appear on your paper! (If it’s not very clear you may need more light.

Experiment 2:

Step 1: Fill a clear glass or bowl about 3/4 fill of water.

Step 2: Carefully drop a small mirror in the water.

Step 3: Bring your glass or bowl to a light source. We used sunlight from the window.

Step 4: You should see a rainbow on your wall or ceiling. Experiment with moving the mirror around and maybe using a flashlight to shine a light.

Experiment 3:

This one we did during bath time.

Step 1: Fill a bath with water.

Step 2: Let your child hold a mirror.

Step 3: Experiment with light reflecting with the mirror in the water, halfway in the water, out of the water, and move it around to see what happens.

The rainbows really stand out in dark rooms and using a flashlight.

After learning and exploring rainbows, it would be fun to color a picture of one.

Lastly, don’t forget to end your lesson with Noah and the ark and read Genesis 9:13-16
