Fermenting with Fermentools
Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.
We have been having a great time fermenting vegetables with the Starter Kit from Fermentools!
When the Starter Kit arrived, it included high-quality parts such as the powdered pink Himalayan sea salt, stainless steel lid, a glass weight, a rubber gasket, and a stopper. All I needed to begin fermenting was a wide mouth jar, vegetables, and water!
The instructions provided were simple to follow and their website has great ideas, recipes, and tips to get started.
Charts for salt conversations are conveniently printed on the salt bag, and after a few tries, the salt percentages were easy to figure out. The charts are super helpful for finding the correct salt measurements for the size of jar you’re using.
What did we make?
First, we made some delicious sliced carrots.
We cut them up, added water, decided on what percentage of salt we wanted to try, and with the included chart we added the correct amount needed, then topped the jar with the Fermentools Kit.
After leaving it in a dark place for a week, our fermented carrots were ready! They were a hit with my family. They were very crunchy and salty but not too overpowering at a 3.5% solution. We finished the entire jar in just a few days.
Next, we pickled cucumbers!
Sliced them into spears, added garlic and dill chose to stick with the 3.5% salt solution, and then waited for them to ferment for 8 days.
They were the perfect consistency of what you would expect from a pickle spear, however it tasted a bit too salty for my liking. My husband thought they were great, but I think I’d like to try the next batch with a 2% salt brine solution.
Final thoughts
I had so much fun fermenting! I always thought fermenting sounded too complicated and I was hesitant to try it. Thankfully, Fermentools made the process simple to follow and gave me the confidence to ferment nearly any kind of vegetable. I may even try creating a beverage next.
