He Is Risen! Celebrate Easter Sunday with Meaningful Bible Lessons & Joyful Activities for Kids

The tomb is empty, the stone is rolled away, and the world has never been the same.

On Easter Sunday, we rejoice in the greatest victory ever won—Jesus has risen from the grave! This isn’t just a story from the past. It’s a promise for today: sin is defeated, death has lost its sting, and new life is blooming in every heart that believes.

This family-friendly devotional and activity guide invites children to celebrate the resurrection in a way that’s fun, meaningful, and rooted in Scripture. Whether you’re a teacher, parent, or ministry leader, these Easter Sunday crafts and lessons will help your kids experience the hope and joy of this holy day.

Bible Story & Reflection

Scripture: Matthew 28:6 (KJV)

“He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.”

What Happened on Easter Sunday?

Early in the morning, some women went to the tomb where Jesus had been buried. But when they arrived, something amazing had happened—the stone had been rolled away! The tomb was empty.

An angel greeted them and said, “Don’t be afraid. Jesus isn’t here—He is risen, just like He said!” The women ran to tell the disciples the incredible news: Jesus is alive!

Why Does the Resurrection Matter?

Jesus didn’t just die for our sins—He rose from the dead to defeat sin, death, and darkness forever. That means:

  • Sin is defeated.
  • Death isn’t the end.
  • We can live with hope, joy, and new life.

Jesus’ resurrection proves His love is stronger than anything—even the grave.

Discussion Questions

  • What do you think it was like for the women to find the empty tomb?
  • Why does it matter that Jesus came back to life?
  • How can we celebrate the new life He gives us?

Closing Prayer

“Jesus, You are alive—and that changes everything! Thank You for defeating sin and death so we can live with You forever. Please fill our hearts with joy today and help us share this good news with others. Amen!”

Craft Activity:

1. Roll the Stone Craft – Part 2: The Tomb Is Empty!

Supplies:

  • Completed tomb and stone from Saturday
  • Crayons or markers
  • Optional: tissue paper, fabric scraps (to represent grave cloths)
  • Optional: small paper figures (Jesus, angel, women at the tomb)

Instructions:

  1. Roll the Stone Away: Move the paper rock to the side to reveal the dark tomb.
  2. Add Details (optional): Place fabric scraps inside to represent the grave cloths left behind. Draw an angel or women peeking into the tomb.
  3. Celebrate the Empty Tomb: Add the words “He is Risen!” in bright colors inside the tomb.

The Big Lesson: On Easter morning, the stone was rolled away—not so Jesus could get out, but so we could see that He had risen! His empty tomb means He is alive—and we can have new life too.

2. Resurrection Garden (Nature-Inspired Scene)

Supplies:

  • Flower pot or large cup (to lay on its side for the tomb)
  • Large stone (to roll in front of tomb
  • Dirt, moss, or grass seed
  • Small sticks, flowers, herbs
  • Optional: Cross made from twigs, painted rocks with words like “Love” or “Grace”

Instructions:

  1. Lay the pot on its side in a box, tray, or garden area to create a “tomb.”
  2. Roll a large rock in front for the stone.
  3. Add moss, dirt, or plant grass/herbs to make it a living garden.
  4. Decorate with natural items that remind kids of God’s love: hearts made of pebbles, a twig cross, flower “offerings.”

The Big Lesson: Jesus’ resurrection brings new life—just like the life that grows from seeds in spring. His love transforms even the darkest tomb into a place of beauty and hope.

3. Easter Poppers (Surprise Scripture Crackers)

Supplies:

  • Toilet paper or paper towel rolls (cut to size)
  • Tissue paper (bright Easter colors)
  • Ribbon or string
  • Small treats, stickers, or folded mini verses
  • Tape or glue

Instructions:

  1. Fill the cardboard tube with goodies and a slip of paper that says something like “He is Risen!” or a verse (Matthew 28:6).
  2. Roll the tube inside tissue paper and tie both ends with ribbon to make it look like a popper.
  3. Kids can pull them open and celebrate the surprise—just like the surprise of the empty tomb!

The Big Lesson: Just like the stone rolled away revealed the greatest surprise of all—Jesus alive!—this little popper holds the joyful truth of resurrection inside.

3. Easter Story Walk (Group Art & Storytelling)

Supplies:

  • Large drawing paper or poster board
  • Crayons, markers, or paints
  • Bible (to read the story together)
  • Tape, clothespins, or easels for display

Instructions:

  1. Divide the Easter story into scenes (e.g. Last Supper, Garden, Cross, Tomb, Resurrection).
  2. Assign each child or group a part of the story to illustrate and/or write.
  3. Once all the pieces are complete, hang them in order on a wall, fence, or hallway to create a “walkable” Easter story journey.

The Big Lesson: Each part of Jesus’ story matters—and when we put it all together, we see the full picture of His love, sacrifice, and victory.

4. Egg Relay Race

Supplies:

  • Plastic eggs
  • Spoon
  • Outdoor or indoor space

Instructions

  1. Kids balance eggs on spoons and race from one side to another.
  2. Add stations where they have to say a resurrection truth (e.g., “Jesus is alive!” or “He forgives me!”) before continuing
  3. Play in teams or time each participant for extra fun

The Big Lesson: The joy of Easter is worth sharing! We can “run to tell the good news,” just like the women at the empty tomb.
