Holy Saturday Bible Lesson for Kids: Waiting with Hope and Fun Faith Crafts

Holy Saturday is a quiet, powerful day in the Easter story—full of waiting, wondering, and holding on to hope. After Jesus was laid in the tomb, His friends didn’t know what would happen next. But even in the silence, God was preparing a miracle. In this post, you’ll find a simple Bible story reflection from Luke 23:53, meaningful discussion questions, and four hands-on activities to help kids connect with the heart of Holy Saturday.

Whether you’re teaching at home, in church, or just looking for a peaceful family devotion, this Holy Saturday Bible lesson for kids invites stillness, reflection, and hope.

Bible Story & Reflection

Scripture: Luke 23:53 (KJV)

“And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.”

What Happened on Saturday?

After Jesus died on the cross, His friends were full of sadness. A man named Joseph, who loved and followed Jesus, gently took His body down from the cross. He wrapped it in cloth and laid it in a brand-new tomb carved from rock. A huge stone was rolled in front of the entrance.

Saturday felt silent. The disciples were heartbroken and confused. Everything felt still and heavy.

But even in the quiet, God was still working.

This day reminds us what it’s like to wait—to feel sorrow and wonder what’s next. But just like a seed planted in the ground, something beautiful was about to grow.

Why Is Saturday Important?

It reminds us that God is still in control—even when we can’t see what He’s doing.

It teaches us to wait with hope, knowing that God’s promises never fail.

It gives us space to reflect on Jesus’ love, and how He gave everything for us.

On this day, we remember how Jesus rested in the tomb—and how His followers waited for what they didn’t yet understand.

Discussion Questions

  • How do you think Jesus’ friends felt on Saturday? Jesus’ friends might have been heartbroken, confused, or scared. They didn’t yet understand that something amazing was coming. Saturday was full of sorrow and waiting.
  • What do you do when you feel like nothing is happening, but you’re waiting for God? Waiting isn’t always easy, but it’s a time when we can learn to trust God more deeply. It’s okay to talk to Him, pray, and be honest about how you feel or ask questions.
  • Why is it important to wait with hope? Because even when we can’t see what God is doing, we know He is still working. Hope helps us hold on to God’s promises and remember that joy is coming.

Closing Prayer

“Dear God, thank You for always working, even when things feel quiet or sad. Help us to wait with hope, knowing You always keep Your promises. Thank You for Jesus, and for the love that never ends. Amen.”

Craft Activities

1. Roll the Stone Craft (Part 1: Sealed Tomb)

Supplies:

  • Construction paper (black, white, or gray)
  • Scissors
  • Crayons, markers, or paint
  • Optional: brass fasteners, tape, or staples

Instructions:

  1. Build the Tomb: Cut out a large, rounded tomb shape from the construction paper.
  2. Create the Entry: Color the center black to show the darkness of the sealed tomb.
  3. Make the Stone: Cut out a separate round “stone” that’s big enough to cover the entryway.
  4. Attach: Use a brass fastener, tape, or a staple to attach the rock so it can “roll” back and forth but stays in place. (For now, keep it closed—the tomb is sealed.)
  5. Pause in the Silence: Reflect on how Jesus’ body rested in the tomb. Tomorrow, the stone will be rolled away.

The Big Lesson: On Saturday, Jesus’ body rested in the tomb. Even when everything felt quiet and still, God’s love was still at work—getting ready for the miracle of Easter morning.

2. Hope in the Waiting: Seed Planting

Supplies:

  • Small cups or pots
  • Soil
  • Seeds (flowers, herbs, or any small seed)
  • Water

Instructions:

  1. Plant: Scoop soil into each cup and gently plant the seed.
  2. Water: Add a little water and place it in a sunny spot.
  3. Wait: Talk about how it takes time for seeds to grow—but something beautiful is happening even when we can’t see it.

The Big Lesson: Saturday reminds us that even in silence, God is working. Like seeds in the soil, hope is growing—even when we can’t see it yet.

3. Stillness Drawing

Supplies

  • Paper
  • Crayons or pencils
  • Peaceful music (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Sit Quietly: Invite kids to be still and think about how much Jesus loves them.
  2. Draw: Ask them to draw what they feel—maybe a cross, a heart, a tomb with light behind it, or even just colors that feel peaceful.
  3. Share: Let kids explain their pictures if they’d like.

The Big Lesson: God speaks even in quiet moments. When we listen, we can feel His peace and remember His love.

4. Stone of Waiting

Supplies:

  • Smooth stones (or paper cut into stone shapes)
  • Markers or paint
  • Optional: Mod Podge to seal

Instructions:

  1. Decorate: Write a word or phrase on the stone like “Hope,” “Wait,” “Jesus is Alive,” or “God is working.”
  2. Keep It Close: Kids can take it home and hold it when they’re waiting or feeling unsure.

The Big Lesson: Even when things feel uncertain, we can trust that God is working—and that joy is coming.
