Islands and Enemies
Disclosure: I received this complimentary product from the Homeschool Review Crew.
We received a copy of a great children’s fictional book called Islands and Enemies from Tyndale.
I was very interested in this book because it sounded like a Christian series that is full of exciting adventures. My young reader is just starting to finish picture books on her own and I wanted to give her a chapter book that would introduce her to the thrill of reading without pictures.
However, there are so many books out there, and as we all know, you can’t judge a book by it’s cover! It’s difficult determining what’s safe for my children to read.
To me, it’s important to be involved in choosing which books they should be exposed to. Because, the materials they read, watch, or listen to, will help shape the kind of people they want to be. Ultimately, I want a good, clean, book that features characters with integrity.
When I read the book description for Islands and Enemies from the Adventures in Odyssey Imagination Station series, I knew this was exactly the type of book my daughter needed. It has lessons in faith, it’s historically accurate, and the kids have adventures! That’s a win, win, win for me!
The Book
Islands and Enemies is the 28th book in the Imagination Station series. It is suggested for kids aged 7 and up.
The cover is thick and colorful with graphics of the main characters riding dolphins.
Inside the book, there are just over 150 black and white pages. The font appears to be a large size with wide spacing, which is great for children.
There are some pictures throughout the pages that help readers get a starting point for their imagination.
Also, as a bonus, there is a fun word puzzle the end of the story.
Our Thoughts
When we received the book, I read the first chapter out loudly as my first grader listened. I thought it started off good, but my daughter wasn’t following along and she looked uninterested. I couldn’t understand her reaction, so I asked her to read it to me as part of her reading class. When she completed the chapter, she asked if she could read another one.
She loved the book!
My daughter read at her pace and as much as she wanted to. She enjoyed reading it to me and if I was busy she would read it to herself. She read pretty consistently about a few chapters every day until she finished the book.
I was so happy we found a book that she looked forward to reading. It was her first chapter book and she liked it so much that she would like another one from that series!
We thoroughly enjoyed this book and I think you will too. Read more review from other families by clicking the link below!
Thanks for reading our review!
Have a great day!
