Palm Sunday: A Craft, A Celebration, and A King on a Donkey

Hi friends!
Every year, our family celebrates Holy Week with a unique, hands-on craft for each day—helping us reflect on the life, love, and sacrifice of Jesus in a way that’s simple and meaningful for kids.

Today is Palm Sunday, and I’d love to share one of the activities we’re doing—straight from my eBook An Easter Journey: Hands-On Bible Lessons & Crafts for Holy Week!

Bible Story & Reflection

Scripture: Matthew 21:6-9 “And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them, 7and brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon. 8And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. 9And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest”

What Happened on Palm Sunday?

Today marks the beginning of Holy Week, the week leading to Jesus’ Resurrection. On this day, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey—a symbol of peace and humility. The people were so excited that they waved palm branches, laid down their cloaks, and shouted, “Hosanna!”

But what does ‘Hosanna’ mean? It means ‘Save us!’ The people recognized Jesus as their King, the Messiah they had been waiting for. They believed He had come to rescue them—based on prophecies like Zechariah 9:9, which said their King would come riding on a donkey. Many expected Jesus to save them from Roman rule and become a powerful earthly king. But Jesus came to bring a greater salvation—saving people from sin and bringing them back to God.

Discussion Questions:

  • Why were the people so excited to see Jesus? The Jewish people had been waiting for a Savior, and they believed Jesus was the promised King! They had heard about His miracles and expected Him to rescue them from Roman rule.
  • What does “Hosanna” mean, and why did the people shout it? Hosanna means “Save us!” The people were asking Jesus to save them, thinking He would become a powerful earthly king.
  • Why did Jesus ride on a donkey instead of a mighty horse? A horse would have symbolized war, but a donkey was a sign of peace and humility. Jesus came as a humble King, not a warrior king.
  • How would you welcome Jesus if He arrived in your town today?

Closing Prayer

“Dear Jesus, we welcome You as our King! Just as the people in Jerusalem shouted ‘Hosanna,’ we praise You today. Help us to follow You and celebrate Your love. Amen.”

  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Popsicle sticks

Instructions:

  1. Trace your hand on green construction paper and carefully cut it out.
  2. Glue the handprint onto a popsicle stick to create a mini palm branch.
  3. Want a bigger one? Glue multiple handprints together!
  4. Use your palm branch to reenact the crowd joyfully welcoming Jesus—wave it and shout, “Hosanna!”

The Big Lesson:
