Singapore Math Live created math videos for homeschooling families and I was eager to review their Singapore Math Live – Challenging Word Problems Level 1 course.

Even though I enjoy math problems, my daughter cringes when she hears the word. She thinks she hates math, but when she gets started and can complete a problem correctly, it’s not so bad.

It’s difficult for me to explain how to solve challenging word problems. It’s almost as if the moment I open my mouth, my daughter gives up on the assignment. Needless to say, it can be a frustrating and discouraging experience for both of us!

The Singapore Math Live videos go with the Singapore Math workbooks. We used the Challenging Word Problems Level 1 class. Each of the problems in the workbook is explained by Singapore Math Live using short video clips.

What a relief these videos are for us!

Each video clip discusses the word problem and shows how to accurately solve it. They explain how to get the answers with step by step visuals and often include different ways that a student may get to the answers.

Not only do we see how to get to the answer, we get to see other ways of thinking about the problem. I believe this will help my child find a method that makes sense to her and will assist her in efficiency for future problems.

For our math class, I let my first grader attempt the problems first and then we watch the video clips together. The demonstrations aren’t overwhelming or complicated, so my daughter pays attention and follows along. It’s like a breath of fresh air for this struggling mom! I am so happy to see her not give up or through a fit from lack of understanding.

If you struggle to explain how to solve math problems, I highly recommend Singapore Math Live – Challenging Word Problems! Even if you can explain the problems, it’s a great addition to your math class as the videos explain other methods that may be easier for your child.
