Spy Wednesday – A Betrayal for Silver?

Free Holy Week Devotional for Families

Scripture Reading: Matthew 26:14–16

“Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,
and said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you?
And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.
And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.”

What Happened on Spy Wednesday?

Spy Wednesday is an important but somber day in Holy Week. On this day, Judas Iscariot—one of Jesus’ own disciples—agreed to betray Him for thirty pieces of silver.

Why would Judas do such a thing?

  • Some say he was greedy.
  • Others think he was disillusioned that Jesus wasn’t leading a political rebellion.
  • And the Bible tells us Satan entered his heart (Luke 22:3).

Even though Judas followed Jesus for years, he still chose silver over the Savior. His story reminds us how easily our hearts can wander—and how important it is to keep our focus on Jesus.

But here’s the amazing part: God used even Judas’ betrayal as part of His bigger plan. Through Jesus’ arrest, death, and resurrection, salvation was made possible for the whole world!

Discussion Questions for Families:

  • Why do you think Judas betrayed Jesus?
  • What can we learn from his decision?
  • In what ways do we sometimes betray Jesus in our daily lives?
(Even small choices that turn our hearts from Him matter—but Jesus always welcomes us back when we come to Him with a humble heart.)

Prayer:

“Dear Jesus, help us to always choose You over anything else. Let our hearts be faithful, and help us stay strong even when we face temptation. Amen.”

Try This: “The Hidden Betrayal” Apple Experiment

A simple object lesson that’s full of meaning:

🧃 Supplies:

  • 12 apple slices (representing the 12 disciples)
  • Lemon juice
  • Small brush or cotton swab
  • A plate or tray

📝 Instructions:

  • Brush 11 apple slices with lemon juice (representing the 11 faithful disciples).
  • Leave 1 slice untreated—this one represents Judas.
  • As you move through the lesson, the untreated apple will begin to brown—showing how sin and betrayal leave a mark.

🍏 Lesson Connection:
Just like the untreated apple begins to rot, turning away from Jesus leads to decay in our hearts. But when we stay close to Him, He protects and preserves us.
