Who is it for?

The whole family from 3 years old and up can join on one monthly subscription. However, in the Self Defense class, students need to be at least 5 years old and up to join.

Our Experience

A few months ago, my daughter and I joined the self-defense class from Practice Monkeys. We had no previous experience or any idea of what the class would be like. Luckily, they have a registration and placement test before starting any of their programs.

For the initial placement, all we had to do was log in to the website, click on the assessment classroom link, and it connected us with the teacher via a zoom meeting. Here, we discussed our lack of experience and were advised what we could expect during the class. It was a very nice and welcoming experience.

For the class, we would log in to the website just like we did for the placement and meet up with the instructor. The classes are held as a group at a specific time. For us, we attended class at 5:00 pm EST, but as we graduated up a level the class would start at a different time.

The classes were short and very informative. The Self Defense we are taught is based on Gracie jiujitsu or Brazilian Jui-Jitsu. We learned new skills and practiced as a group. On top of the live classes, we are encouraged to continue practicing on our own time. There are instructions, activity sheets, and so many great videos to help us grow.

class

From our experience, partners are absolutely needed in this Self Defense class. There are lots of moves that require an opponent to effectively master the moves or skills needed to succeed.

My daughter absolutely loved this class! She learned so much and I was so pleased to be able to participate with her. As a pregnant mom, I was a little worried about the moves, but we were careful and always kept a boundary with my tummy. (Now, I don’t suggest that pregnant women should join this class, I’m simply saying we were able to carefully practice during my first trimester. Also, I am sure the instructor would be able to assist with any questions and let us skip any questionable activities.)

Due to our schedule, we couldn’t make it to class on Wednesdays, but the classes are recorded and can be viewed online. On the days missed, we watched the video tutorials that were made available and practiced a little extra. This worked well for us!

Together, we were able to graduate to a new level 2 times! It was so great to work together as a team and accomplish our goals. On top of learning Self Defense, it was also an encouraging and relationship-building class.

Practice Monkeys has so much to offer families and students. If you’re looking to add music or physical education to your day, I highly recommend checking out Practice Monkeys!
