My daughter is learning with the PRIDE Yellow Book Program Kit – Level 1 from the PRIDE Reading Program. The PRIDE Reading Program is for children learning reading, writing and sentence comprehension. All reading age children can use this program but this is especially great for children with learning disabilities. It uses multi-sensory teaching to meet the needs of any learning style through the Orton-Gillingham method of instruction. Read more on the Orton-Gillingham method at the PRIDE Reading Program website HERE.

For starters, I want to point out that I could have really benefited from this program and would have loved this as a child. I’m dyslexic and I have struggled with literature for many years. I really didn’t get a good grasp on reading, writing, spelling or reading comprehension until college. A good teacher and repetition is so important for students struggling and this program has a complete guide to help children successfully learn.

Before you begin the program, the student takes an assessment to see which program book and level they are at. This gives the student a package that fits them the best. This isn’t a one size fits all teaching guide, it doesn’t just go by age or grade, the placement is chosen by what they currently know. Children learn differently and at their own pace and this works with them right where they are at.

Next, the teacher, parent, mentor, tutor or whoever is helping the student goes through a training. This is to make sure that you are properly teaching the program the way it is designed to work. The guided training is very detailed with videos, audio and explanations of how to teach this method. You really get a good understanding of how the program works and how it should be conducted.

Than, while working through the lessons, the student learns using multi-sensory techniques hearing, feeling, seeing and word repetition. My daughter and I usually do 3 units a week, which completes 1 lesson. Each unit averages about an hour and a half for us to finish. We regularly use the supplies that were included with our kit in each of the lessons. For an example, a whiteboard with dry erase markers is used for seeing words, saying them and practice writing them. The letter tiles and cards used allow my daughter to hold the letters, move them around to make a word, and see them while sounding it out. She also practices writing with her finger on her palm while sounding out the letters. As well as, tapping her arm while spelling as another sensory learning technique.

My final thoughts on the PRIDE Reading Program is that it is perfect for anyone ready to get serious about learning. This is by far the best resource for learning how to read, write and comprehend sentences that I have ever seen. Sometimes it may seem long and repetitive but I can really see progress being made after each lesson. My daughter looks forward to the units that end with a game. I love seeing her confidence in reading increase. If you have a child or know of one that is struggling, seriously take this program into consideration because it is wonderful!
