WordBuild Online
Disclosure: I received this complimentary product from the Homeschool Review Crew.
My daughter has been using WordBuild Online from Dynamic Literacy to work on her vocabulary and reading skills.
This program is an online educational tool that helps kids learn vocabulary words by using morphology. It uses meaning, roots, prefixes, and suffixes to strengthen reading comprehension.
I have never heard of morphology before this program, so I was eager to see how it works.
How We Used It
Being that my daughter is in 2nd grade and can sight read, we started with foundations level 1. It consists of 25 units of commonly used prefixes and suffixes.
When we first logged in, she took a pretest to see where she is at and where she needs to begin.
After the pretest, we waited until the next day for the first lesson. By default, students are limited to one lesson a day to better retain the information they are learning. However, parents or teachers do have the ability to change the limits in the settings. I chose to follow the suggestion from the program and limit 1 lesson per day.
For the 1st lesson, I sat down with my daughter and watched and assisted her as she went through the questions. It was pretty self explanatory but my daughter did need a little guidance to get her started.
As she continued logging in and completing other lessons, she was able to work through them completely independently.
We used WordBuild Online as part of our reading class in our homeschool. Each lesson takes only 15 minutes or less to complete and we used it as a daily practice.
Our Thoughts
First of all, the program worked nicely without any glitches or problems. We didn’t have to wait for the page to load which is nice for me. It makes the process of working on a lesson easy and hassle-free.
My daughter enjoys using WordBuild Online. She likes that it’s a short lesson and feels like a computer game. The graphics are exciting with bright colors and easy to read fonts, which is perfect for kids!
I’m impressed by the lessons and use of morphology. It’s different than other reading and comprehension modules I’ve seen. They have a nice table of words that students try to create new words and define them in their own words. It’s a really neat way to get kids to think about the words instead of memorizing them.
I’d recommend this program to parents and teachers with kids in at least 2nd to 5th grade. However, there is a learning series for older kids as well.
