We were glad that we’re able to add the Wagon Wheels Study Guide by Progeny Press to our Language Arts class.

When I saw the Progeny Press Study Guides I was apprehensive. I didn’t own the book Wagon Wheels and I certainly didn’t want to do a study guide with my young daughter. I didn’t think studying a book further than reading it would be beneficial.

Maybe I was getting flashbacks from the study guides I did in school because to me sounded like extra work that could make even an interesting book seem like a chore. Even thinking about the words “Study Guide” makes me cringe.

Boy was I wrong!

Getting Started

I borrowed the book Wagon Wheels from the library and read it to my daughter. We both enjoyed the book and went through the Study Guide together. I was amazed at the quality of the content!

First of all, the Wagon Wheels study guide was way more than a study guide. It included questions that help the students (and parents or teachers) dive deeper into the story. Questions that I would never think about. They covered what was included in the book and taught more about the historical background as well as the biography of the author. That gave us a bigger better picture of what was going on in the story.

Secondly, my first grader had no problem answering the questions! We used this study guide for writing and reading practice. I picked which questions I wanted her to write the answers to and we discussed the rest of them together. To my surprise, she enjoyed thinking about the story we read and coming up with answers to the questions in front of her. She practiced compound words, true and false statements, and was able to complete most of the work by herself.

Lastly, not only was it beneficial to work on a study guide for the book, it was fun! Yes, I said that it was actually fun! It included crossword puzzles, drawing, maps, and more. My daughter wanted to keep doing the worksheets, which is always a wonderful thing to me.

The Wagon Wheels Study Guide is great for children who are starting to get into reading, but Progeny Press has Study Guides for many books that fit all kinds of grade levels. They provide a great literature lesson plan that you can easily download and print.

Definitely check out what they have to offer! You don’t have to take my word for it, read more reviews from other homeschooling families by clicking the link below.
