Brain Jello

Simple, healthy, and creepy Halloween dish that guests will either love or get grossed out by it.

Last night our family had a pumpkin carving party and we made this Jello Brain as a snack!

I really enjoy making creepy and theme-related dishes to share but I was pressed for time this week. So I knew I had to come up with something fun but that wasn’t too time-consuming.

While at my local thrift store I saw a brain mold and I thought that was a perfect idea and we have a great recipe for Jello.

The only problem was color. I thought to myself, “how do we get it to look realistic or scary without using artificial colors?”

I knew the color would be kind of tricky. A nice peach juice would be great or a pink. I also didn’t want our Brain to be translucent, even though that would still look nice. While shopping we grabbed an organic berry superfruit juice that was dark red and a tropical fruit juice that was a dark orange color.

Brain Jello

Here’s how we did it:

Following the recipe below, we used 3 cups of orange tropical juice, 1 cup of red berry juice, and I added 1/4 cup of milk.

We also added 1 extra tablespoon of gelatin to help keep it together. After all, we were hoping it would be tasty, look great, and stay together. So I thought we better make sure it was firm enough.

To make sure the Jello wouldn’t stick, we sprayed the mold with a nonstick cooking spray.

We refrigerated it for 4 hours to be safe and carefully flipped it onto the platter.

Then, we mixed a tablespoon of red jelly and 1/2 tablespoon of water in a cup. With a basting brush, we carefully applied the jelly mixture to the top of the brain. It made it look wet and gooey.

Lastly, we decorated around the Brain with fruit and treats!
